The Difference Between International and Domestic Travel with a Baby

We took our first international flight with our 7-month-old baby, and I was a little surprised to learn the differences along the way. We flew from Aspen, Colorado to Belize City, Belize. Here's what I learned:

  1. Passports: I learned this way before we flew, but you will need to get your baby a passport. Getting a baby passport photo is no easy task - I had to put this nasty 17-year-old post-office sheet over my head and hold my baby in front of me. It was disgusting, but it worked. Maybe bring your own sheet.

  2. Reservations: You need to call the airline prior to departure to add your infant to your reservation. I thought my baby was added to our reservation because I was able to add him as a lap infant online, however - that was not the case. I needed to pay taxes and fees for him to travel with us, and he was not actually added to our reservation until I called them.

  3. Checking In: It might take a hot minute to check in - give yourself plenty of time so you are not stressed!

  4. Birth Certificate: You might be asked for your baby's birth certificate - have a copy on hand. This is especially true if you and your partner have different last names or if you and your baby have different last names. This goes for kids and teenagers as well (at least in Belize). If you are a blended family, like us, you will also need to provide a notarized document signed by both parents indicating acknowledgment and approval for travel.

  5. Immunizations: Talk with your pediatrician with plenty of notice to discuss potential immunizations necessary for your baby. We had to go back twice because the early MMR was not able to be given at the same time as his 6 month shots.

Most importantly, I want you to know that it was so fun. We planned, prepped, and organized correctly so it was never stressful. Take your baby with you on your trips, it is worth it!
